Ryozo Tsukada was born on November 29, 1948, in Osaka, Japan. A versatile martial artist, he currently holds the rank of 8th Dan FFKDA in Shito-Ryu Karate, as well as a 2nd Dan in Judo and 1st Dan in Kendo. Since 2001, he has served as a federal expert for the French Karate Federation.
Tsukada began his martial journey under the guidance of his father, a 5th Dan Judo teacher. Growing up in a household dedicated to the arts, he also practiced Aikido and Kendo with his brothers. At the age of twelve, he discovered Shotokan Karate through Sensei Yamada, a close friend of his father.
Tsukada later joined the renowned Karate school at the University of Osaka. Training there was grueling and held under the direction of Hanshi Chojiro Tani, the primary disciple of Shito-Ryu founder Kenwa Mabuni. This period was pivotal, as the university team was frequently showcased in high-level martial arts competitions, allowing Tsukada to cross paths with many influential figures.
Following his graduation, Tsukada accepted an invitation from Yoshinao Nanbu to move to France in 1972. Serving as Nanbu’s assistant in the Sankukai school for ten years, he became a fixture in the French martial arts scene. Seeking to further deepen his technical knowledge, he eventually sought out Sensei Kenji Kusano, a master recognized for his authentic and traditional approach.
As the European representative of the WKKA (World Kenshikan Kenpo Karatedo Association), Tsukada has traveled extensively to promote traditional martial arts. His teaching style balances the traditional study of kata and bunkai with the requirements of modern competition. Known for his deep understanding of body mechanics, he continues to teach across France, Europe, and Africa.
