Frank Williams was born in Concord, North Carolina, in May 1959. A highly educated martial artist, he holds a PhD in Business from LaSalle University. His journey in the martial arts is deeply intertwined with his service as a United States Marine, during which he spent 13 years living and training in Okinawa, Japan.
While stationed in Okinawa, Shihan Williams trained under some of the most respected names in Shorin-Ryu, including Grand Master Fusei Kise (Shorin Ryu Kenshinkan), Kyoshi Ed Gingras and Akamine Yoshimatsu (Matsumura Seito), and Hanshi Seifuku Nitta. His dedication led to him receiving Menkyo Kaiden from Hanshi Seifuku Nitta in 2007.
In 1999, with the blessing of Grand Master Kise, Shihan Williams founded the Zen Sekai Bujitsu Kyo-kai, known internationally as the Universal Martial Arts Association (UMAA). Today, the organization spans over 25 US states and 20 countries, operating on the principle that the similarities between styles and concepts are far more important than their differences.
A retired USMC Chief Warrant Officer-4 and a Disabled American Veteran, Shihan Williams served as a Hand-to-Hand Combat Instructor and Close Combat Instructor Trainer while on active duty. Though he retired from active school teaching in 2004, he continues to mentor martial artists nationwide on history, application, and business management.
His legacy is carried forward by his son, Ryuji, who serves as Chief Instructor at the Family Karate Centers founded by his father in North Carolina.
