Jo (four-foot staff)

The Jo (four-foot staff) and the Hanbo (three-foot "half-Bo") were historically specialized by royal palace guards. These weapons were particularly effective within the confined spaces of the sleeping quarters and other private areas of Shuri Castle and similar high-security Okinawan residences.

A versatile implement, the Jo can be utilized to strike with the precision of a sword, sweep with the leverage of a naginata, or thrust with the directness of a spear. Unlike the single point of a sword, both ends of the Jo are utilized in combat, and its ma-ai (fighting distance) can be adjusted instantaneously by shifting the hand grip.

A Formidable Tool

Because of its speed and adaptable range, the Jo is a formidable weapon in the hands of a skilled practitioner. In the context of Okinawan martial history, it represents a bridge between the longer battlefield weapons and the compact tools used for internal protection and law enforcement.
